Jayce is an intern for the Washington State Labor Council working with Teamsters 117. This fall, he is going into his fourth year of studying political science. His decision to choose this area of study came from understanding that politics touches every aspect of our lives. Jayce is hoping to affect positive change in our communities.
What motivated you to do your internship in the labor movement?
I come from a multi-generational union family. Both of my grandpas, my dad, my uncle and my sister's husband are all members of unions. With that, I've been able to witness my family go from poverty to the middle class. My sister and I have access to better opportunities than our parents, and now we are the first ones in our family to attend college. My grandfather was a garbage truck driver and a Teamster, so that added to my excitement to do an internship at Local 117.
I feel like unions especially have helped out in my life, and that has been something that I want to change for others. I think that a lot of people have been ripped off by their employers. A lot of stuff has gone on where workers aren't getting a fair share. I want to change that.
