Teamsters 117 started the New Year off by giving back to the community. 

El 4 de enero, un equipo de Shop Stewards se reunió con John Scearcy, Presidente y Asistente Ejecutivo del Local 117, para pasar esa fría mañana de invierno como voluntarios en el La Red de Alimentos de Emergencia proyecto de reembalaje.

Su trabajo consistía en volver a empaquetar el maíz cortado congelado, que había sido donado a granel, en bolsas de dos libras de tamaño familiar. Juntos, Jason Stepner, John Langenbach, Mike Reavey, Jason King y John Scearcy ayudaron a reempacar 6.400 libras de maíz cortado congelado en un turno de 3 horas.  

“Each month there are more than 116,000 visits made to Pierce County emergency food sites by children, seniors and adults needing help,” Scearcy said.  “I work hard representing members of our Union every day, but my responsibility to the struggling middle class extends to the rest of the community as well.” 

“Helping communities is what we Teamsters do.  If we all helped out in a small way in our communities, just imagine how much better off things would be.”

Jason Stepner, a longtime Shop Steward at FSA, has always been willing to donate his time to those in need and was appreciative of his Union’s leadership for presenting him with the opportunity.

"Siento que nuestros miembros creen verdaderamente en el trabajo conjunto y solidario para abordar los principales problemas en nuestros lugares de trabajo, nuestras comunidades y más allá", dijo Stepner. "Muchos de nosotros simplemente no sabemos dónde y cómo podemos ser útiles. Cuando John Scearcy me ofreció esta oportunidad, respondió a esa pregunta por mí y yo estaba más que feliz de ayudar."

Jason King compartió sus sentimientos después de ser voluntario: "La parte más gratificante es devolver a la comunidad que me ha dado toda mi vida".

Una vez reempaquetadas, estas bolsas estaban listas para ser distribuidas a individuos y familias necesitadas en los sitios de alimentos de emergencia del Condado de Pierce.

Mike Reavey talked about the power of this collective effort.  “It is great to see that we as Teamsters can stick together in the workplace and also come together to help in our community,” he said.

John Langenbach the most senior Teamster of the bunch, with over 20 years of membership experience, put it simply, “Helping communities is what we Teamsters do.  If we all helped out in a small way in our communities, just imagine how much better off things would be.”
