The scholarship awards academic support ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 for high school seniors planning to attend a four-year college or university and Training/Vocational program awards of up to $2,000 for use at community colleges and trade schools.

James R. Hoffa se convirtió en miembro de Teamster en 1934 y sirvió como Presidente General durante 14 años. En reconocimiento a su incansable servicio a unión y a sus miembros, Hoffa fue honrado como Presidente General Emérito de por vida. En la reunión de la Junta Ejecutiva General de noviembre de 1999, el Secretario-Tesorero General C. Thomas Keegel presentó una resolución para establecer el nuevo fondo de becas.
