Hundreds of shop stewards from across our union will meet this Saturday at the Washington Convention Center for training and to build union power.

Our annual Shop Steward Seminar and Appreciation Day will be back in person this year after a two year hiatus due to the pandemic. Stewards will also have the option of participating in the event virtually.

"This is our signature event for shop stewards, and I'm thrilled to be meeting in person again," said John Scearcy, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 117.

"Our stewards are the backbone of this union and play a critical role in enforcing our contracts, engaging our membership, and building unity and power. This is our chance to recognize them for their dedication and tireless service," Scearcy said.

The event kicks off with a buffet breakfast at 7:30am on Saturday, followed by a plenary session, in which Secretary-Treasurer Scearcy will deliver his "State of the Union" address. We'll also be hearing from IBT strategic campaigns staff, Shaun Martinez, about our International Union's efforts to organize workers at Amazon.

Then we'll bring a panel of members on stage to discuss their thoughts on how to run successful campaigns to win strong contracts. The plenary session will be followed by smaller workshops and lunch.

As always, our DOC stewards will be arriving on Friday for a meeting at the Union Hall in Tukwila, which will focus on upcoming contract negotiations with the State.

We are incredibly excited to see people in person at the event this year! If you have questions, please reach out to our Local 117 office at 206-441-4860 or email Maddy Shumate at [email protected]
